HOMEMADE BUTTER
If there is a way for me to create an addition to my home and food choice that is a little more healthy and cost effective, I’m definitely going to try it. Check out an easy way to make your own butter AND buttermilk (both I used on my grannie’s homemade buttermilk biscuit recipe) that takes approximately 10 minutes!
INGREDIENTS
3 cups of heavy whipping cream. I preferably like to use Kalona, but you can use any type of cream you’d like.
PREP
Mixing bowls (preferably 2)
Blender or kitchen aid mixer
Butter dish or something to add your butter in
Ice and water for the 2nd mixing bowl
OPTIONAL: sea salt
DIRECTIONS
Add the heavy cream in your blender or kitchen aid.
Blend for approximately 3 minutes. You will see cream turn whipped.
Stop the blending for 1 minute.
Turn the blender back on for approximately 3-5 minutes. You will see the butter separate. It will look chunky.
Squeeze the butter with your hands to squeeze the liquid out
Add the butter to the ice water and let it sit for approximately 3 minutes
You can take the milk and put it in a separate container to use for later use. Use the milk within 7-10 days.
After the butter has sat in the ice water, you will see the water is cloudy. Squeeze the butter and pour the liquid out.
Add more cold water (no ice this time) and let the butter sit in there again for 1 minute. Squeeze the butter again
Take the butter out the water and lay it on a surface. Either a cutting board or parchment paper
Shape the butter, add it to a container and put it in the fridge. Make sure it is in the fridge for at least 4 hours before using.
EXTRA: you can sprinkle sea salt at the top of the butter. If it’s a good grade of salt, it will bring out the flavor of the butter.
